Overview

The RetroVolt is the e-bike people stop you to ask about. Moped-inspired bodywork, fat 20-inch tyres and a 2,000W peak rear hub motor give it the planted, comfortable feel of a small motorcycle while keeping it a bicycle you can pedal, park and lock like any other.

Motor and speed

The rear hub motor peaks at 2,000W and assists up to roughly 30mph where local law allows. Power delivery is smooth rather than jerky, which matters on wet roads and in traffic. Five riding modes — throttle, five levels of pedal assist, cruise and pure pedal — let you decide how much effort you want to put in on any given day.

Range and battery

A 48V 15Ah battery returns up to 70 miles in the lowest assist mode, which in real terms is a week of short commutes on a single charge. The battery slides out of the frame and charges indoors or at your desk in a few hours, so you never have to run a cable to the bike.

Ride quality

Full suspension front and rear, combined with the air volume of 20×4 inch fat tyres, absorbs potholes, kerbs and gravel in a way that thin-tyre commuters cannot. The upright moped stance is comfortable for longer rides and easy on your back. 7-speed gearing means you can still pedal up a hill with the motor off or the battery flat.

Brakes and weather

Disc brakes pull the extra weight of the bike down confidently in the wet, and the IPX6 rating means rain showers are not a problem. Integrated lighting keeps you visible at dusk.
